Obituary for Helene M. Diller

Helene Diller age 93 of Nashua, Iowa, died Saturday October, 12, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday October 17, 2013 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua with Pastor James Mann presiding. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Friends may greet the family 4 - 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Hugeback Johnson Funeral Home - Olson Chapel in Nashua. Further visitation will be one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church. 641-435-4134

Helene Margaret Diller was born December 10, 1919, on a farm in rural Floyd County, Iowa, near Colwell, the daughter of George (Bill) and Minnie (Hauser) Nicholson. When she was six weeks old she moved with her parents to a farm four miles west of Nashua making the move by bobsled. Helene attended rural school close to their Riverton Township farm through the eighth grade and was a 1937 graduate of the Nashua High School, receiving a normal training certificate. She then attended summer school at Wartburg College, Waverly, and the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.

Helene taught in the rural school system in Floyd, Chickasaw and Butler Counties before and following her marriage to Daniel D. Diller on July 6, 1941 in Unionville, MO. To this union five children were born.

Before Dan entered the United States Navy, the couple lived a brief time in Davenport, Iowa, making Nashua their home in 1943. In 1944, the couple moved to the Diller Farm south of Nashua to care for Dan’s parents and brother. Following Dan’s death in April of 1966, Helene returned to school in Calmar, Iowa, and obtained her L.P.N. Degree.

Helene worked as an L.P.N. in nursing homes in Charles City, Waverly and New Hampton as well as the former St. Joseph Hospital in New Hampton, before retiring in 1984.

Memberships include The Little Brown Church, a charter member of the Ralph W. Nicholson V.F.W. Aux. in Nashua, the Clarksville Rebekah Lodge where she held the prestigious award of “Degree of Chivalry” and the Nashua Garden Club. Helene had been a Cub Scout Den Mother and Girl Scout Leader to the Jr. Girls Unit to the V.F.W. Post #6792.

Survivors include one son, James (Pat) Diller of Nashua; three daughters, Jolene (Jerry) Hendrickson of Washington, IN, Janet (Mike)Clark of Barrington, NH, Jayne (Terry) Dunlap of Shrewsbury, PA; five grandchildren, Sara Diller, Melissa Clark, Benjamin Clark, Matthew Dunlap and Julie Dunlap; one great-grandchild, Kay Ellen Clark; one brother, Richard (Glendora) Nicholson of Nashua; two nieces; two nephews; many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dan; an infant son, Jack William Diller in 1955; one brother, Ralph W. Nicholson and a great-grandchild, Jack Andrew Clark.
