William “Bill” Raymond Duncan was born on Dec. 30, 1918, to James Hugh and Ethel Mary (Young) Duncan at Deerfield. He was the oldest of six children. He attended the Colwell School through fifth grade. After the death of his father, he and his two brothers went to live at the Odd Fellows Home in Mason City. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1936. After graduation, Bill and his brothers returned to Bassett to their mother’s home.

Bill worked for farmers in the area and also was a truck driver. In 1940, he leased the Standard Oil Station in Bassett. In November 1942, Bill entered the Army. He proudly served in the South Pacific during World War II. He served in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines. Bill was honorably discharged in 1945. On Oct. 13, 1940, he married Arvana Lockey and this union was blessed with two children, Karen and Jim. The couple later divorced in 1946. On May 23, 1952, Bill married Ruth Brinkman at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. They were blessed with three daughters, Jane, Sharon and Lori.

The couple farmed east of Charles City and Bill also had a trucking business with his good friend, Cecil Michael. Bill became a Pioneer Seed Salesman in the fall of 1952. Bill and Ruth moved to Riverside Senior Living in Charles City in September 2008. Due to declining health, Bill entered 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home on Feb. 15, 2013. Bill will be remembered as a quiet, hardworking man who was loved by everyone he met.

Bill was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Loyal Order of the Moose, The Heritage Club, Senior Citizens in Ionia and a lifetime member of VFW Post 6792 in Nashua. He was very proud to be on the first Honor Flight that went to Washington D.C. from the area. His reply was, “It’s really something!”
