Obituary

Willis Wilbur Witter was born near Belvidere, Boone County, Illinois, April 17, 1856. He was the eldest of three children; his mother, a brother and a sister of the original family remain to mourn his death.

On January 8, 1879 he was united in marriage with Miss Sybil Blanchard. the newly wed pair came immediately to Iowa to the vicinity of Marble Rock. This place has continued to be Mr. Witter's home place since then, with the exception of a short time spent near his native town in Illinois. Six children came to bless them, all of whom are still living; Mrs. Dora Knoop, of this place, Mrs. Ruth Lockwood, of Mitchell, S. Dak., Burr Witter, Rockford, Iowa, Mrs. Grace Williams, of Blencoe, Iowa, Mrs. Dena Hoyman, of Toledo, Iowa, and Miss Della Witter, Omaha, Nebr. Mrs. Witter died July 25, 1892.

Later Mr. Witter was married to Miss Betty Foster, who survives him. To this union one child was born, who died in infancy.

Several years ago Mr. Witter retired from active farming and moved into town not abandoning, however, his active habits, but continuing his use fullness in his home and town. Many of our citizens have occasion to remember his faithful and conscientious toil when doing some task for with he had been engaged.

A few weeks ago he began suffering severe pain, resulting in the necessity of going to a hospital for expert surgical care. But the treatment came too last to check the progress of the disease. His death occurred Monday night March 12th.

Mr. Witter's long residence here places him among the early settlers. His going breaks one more link in the last diminishing connection between the past and the present of the community. The funeral services are being held this afternoon at his late home, conducted by Rev. R. F. Lusk, pastor of the M.E. church.
