CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Dale Vance, 96, of Charles City, died Tuesday, May 20, 2014, in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd, with Pastor Martha Bennett officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery at Floyd. Military honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and at the church Saturday an hour prior to the service.

Dale Layton Vance was born November 10, 1917, in Floyd County, Iowa, the son of Clifford and Ethel (Hennick) Vance. He graduated from Floyd Consolidated School in 1935. Dale proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.

On July 23, 1944, he was united in marriage to Maxine Mallery. They lived in Las Vegas, Nevada, until Dale was discharged, at which time they moved near Floyd and started farming.

For over 60 years they would live on the farm, moving to Charles City in February of 2012. Maxine died on October 14, 2012. Dale was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, American Legion, 457th Bomber Group, Farm Bureau and had served on the school board of Floyd Consolidated School. He was also instrumental in creating the Floyd Dollars for Scholars. While Dale was always a farmer at heart he also enjoyed reading, history and playing cards.

Living family members include six children, Elaine (Dennis) Harvey of Bel Aire, Kansas, Carolyn (Ron) Jensen of Cedar Falls, Jerry (Anna) Vance of Cedar Falls, Susan (George) Nixt of Greene, Sandy Vance of Charles City and Kris Harris of Springfield, Virginia; daughter-in-law, Jean M. Vance of Floyd; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a sister, Barbara (Jerry) Sudol of Nashua; and a sister-in-law, Jean E. Vance of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Maxine; a son, LeRoy Vance; four brothers, Clifford in infancy, Alvin, Wayne, and Clair Vance; and a sister, Marjorie Stiles.
