Jan Alan Masmar

Born: January 1, 1936
Died: April 6, 2014

Jan Alan Masmar, 78, of Charles City, died Sunday, April 6, 2014, at his home, following a six-month illness.

Friends and family members are invited to remember and celebrate Jan's life during a gathering on Thursday, April 10th at 7:00 PM, at Charles City Congregational United Church of Christ.

Jan was born January 1, 1936, to Max and Ruth Masmar in Clarinda, Iowa. He attended schools in Clarinda and West Union, Iowa, was active in the Boy Scouts, and achieved his Eagle Scout rank before graduating at the young age of 16. Following high school, Jan went on to Clarinda Junior College, during which time he met the love of his life, Donna Jean Anderson, to whom he was married on March 20, 1955 in Stanton, Iowa. Also in 1955, he began what would become a 13-year career with the Iowa National Guard and Reserves, from which he was honorably discharged as a 1st Lieutenant.

Jan began his career in retail with Graham's Department Stores in 1955, then in 1962 moved to Charles City to manage the new Trowbridge Shopping Center. Following the rebuilding of that store after the 1968 tornado and its acquisition by Red Owl Corporation, Jan was asked to join that company's corporate management team and relocated to Minnetonka, Minnesota, where he served as a district and regional manager.

In 1974, Jan returned to Charles City to become a partner in Skyline Harvestore Systems of Nashua. In 1982, he and Donna moved to McComb, MS as a manager for the Harvestore Corporation, and lived there until once again returning to Charles City in 1985 to become Vice President and General Manager of Farm Chem in Floyd, IA, from which he retired in 1992.

Over the past 59 years, Jan and Donna created and enjoyed a wonderful family life, which grew to include their son Craig and his wife Cindy, of Oakdale, Minnesota, and Panama City, Panama, and daughter Julie and her husband Jeff, of Waverly, Iowa, granddaughters Erica (Jeremy) Denzer, Laura (Joshua) Deeds, Kelly (Andrew) Johnson and Beth Ann Meyers, and grandsons Michael Masmar and Daniel Meyers.

In recent years they have welcomed four precious great-grandsons to the family, and in the next few weeks will add a great-granddaughter and a new grandson-in-law. Jan is also survived by his brother John (Carolyn) Masmar of Dexter, Iowa, and was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law and brother Jim Masmar.

Aside from family and career, Jan cultivated quite a variety of other interests, all of which he embraced passionately. For several years he was part owner of Charles City Aeronautics, and loved flying his single-engine planes, trapshooting, playing bridge, and cutting firewood with his friends, as well as reading, cooking, and spending countless hours at his computer. He was a long-time faithful member and servant of Charles City UCC, and was endlessly appreciative of the many rewarding years he enjoyed after retiring.

In lieu of flowers and at his request, those wishing to honor Jan's life with a memorial donation may direct contributions to Charles City UCC, the Charles City ELKS Club, or the Charles City Public Library.
