SMITH--Died at her home in the eastern part of this city, Thursday night, June 23, 1898, Mrs. Charles Smith. aged 54 years and 19 days, the cause of death being rheumatism which developed into blood poisoning.

Deceased, whose maiden name was Mary A. Jordon, was born in Tpaharia county, Ireland, June 4, 1844. At two years of age she moved with her parents to the state of New York, and from there they moved to Springfield, Wisconsin, where she was married to Charles Smith, March 28, 1862. In 1865 they came to Iowa, which has since been their home.

Five children were born to this union: Charlie S., of St. Charles Twp., Orrelia E., now Mrs. Robert Sanderson, of Riverton Twp.,Orville L., deceased, Fred A., recently of this city and soon to return here, and Pearl, who is at home.
Mrs. Smith was converted in 1873, and united with the Methodist church of which she has been a consistent member.

Home was to her the dearest spot on earth. She was a loving mother, a devoted wife, and a faithful friend. She was a kindly, cheerful disposition, thus endearing herself to all around her. She gathered her husband and children around her bedside, calmly giving each one godly counsel and admonishing each to live for God and meet her in heaven. She committed herself entirely in the hands of her Heavenly Father to do as seemeth best to him.

The funeral services were held from the home Saturday morning, at 10 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. C. L. Gould and Rev. H. H. Beach. The latter paid a touching tribute to the memory of the deceased, quoting a number of appropriate passages of scripture, among them the beautiful verses found in John xiv:1-3. Rev. Gould chose as the basis of his appropriate remarks, the 23rd Psalm. The singing, led by Mrs. Lewis, was especially good, and the floral tributes were handsome.

A large number of friends followed the remains to the last resting place in Riverside cemetery. There were thirty carriages that followed Mrs. Smith's remains to the cemetery. A few did not go to the cemetery. Mr. Smith was so over-come that he could not go to the cemetery.
