ROCKFORD, IOWA — Lillian E. Ewen, 78, formerly of 503 E. Main, Rockford, died Thursday (Jan. 29, 2004) at the Nora Springs Care Center.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dougherty. Officiating will be the Rev. Craig Steimel. Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 until 8 p.m. Monday at St. Patrick’s School with a parish wake service at 7 p.m. follow-ed by a parish rosary. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Hospice of North Iowa.
Lillian was born on April 8, 1925, in Hampton, one of four children to Guy and Jewel (Wilhite) Davis. She graduated from Hansell High School in 1942, and then graduated from Hamilton Business College with special honors. She was then employed by the Standard Oil Bulk Depot in Mason City.
She was united in marriage to Charles “Clem” Ewen on Feb. 1, 1947, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church. She raised her five children and enjoyed her life with them. She and her husband enjoyed dancing at the Surf Ballroom, playing “500” card games, and visiting often with family and friends.
Following Clem’s death, she worked at the Rockford Golf and Country Club and then worked for Sam Raizes Department Store and later Spurgeons until her retirement.
She was an avid Hawkeye basketball fan, enjoyed watching figure skating on TV, and reading novels and inspirational books.
She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church until moving to Rockford, when she transferred to Holy Name Catholic Church and was a member of various church circles.
Those thankful for sharing in Lillian’s life include her two daughters, Rosemary and her husband, Roy Shaw, of Martinsburg, W. Va., and Lorena Swanson, of Greene; three sons, Dennis, of Forest City, Don and his wife, Carolyn Ewen, of Rockford, and Gary and his wife, DeeAnn Ewen, of Dougherty; eight grandchildren: Julie and Michael Shaw, Amy and Angie Swanson, Tonya (Dan) Obermire, Jessie (Jason) Reicks, Cole Ewen and Chelsea Ewen; four great-grandchildren, Haleigh and Gavin Reicks, and Elise and Ethan Obermire; and sister- and brother-in-laws, Evelyn Davis, Delmar Koch, Hannah Jansen, Emil and Helen Engles, Agnes Foxen and Doris Ewen, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clem, on Oct. 18, 1976; infant daughter, Catherine; one sister, Dorothy Koch, and two brothers, Harold and Howard Davis.
