Donald E. Bast, 77, of Nashua died Thursday Jan. 9, 2014, at 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday Jan. 13, at St. John Lutheran Church, Nashua with Bill Nielsen, pastor, presiding. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Nashua with Shane Bast, Ashly Bast, Brian Bast, Amanda Hanson, Denise Bast, and Dallas Bast serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Lynn Lantow, Don Stille, and Dave Junker.

Friends may greet the family 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, at Hugeback Johnson Funeral Home – Olson Chapel in Nashua. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Donald Eugene Bast was born August 1, 1936, the son of Earl and Edna (Posekany) Bast in rural Grundy County. Don was a graduate of the Ionia High School in 1955. After school, he worked in the construction field for several years.

On December 3, 1955, he married Marvolyn Chandler at the Ionia Congregational Church. To this union four children were born Dennis, Daniel, David, and Donna. Don started farming west of Nashua in 1962. He farmed there for 10 years.

The family then moved east of Nashua where Don continued to farm until his retirement in 2004. Don always had a very impressive garden each summer. He cherished the time spent with his family, especially his great-grandchildren.

Don is survived by his wife, Marvolyn; three sons, Dennis (Darcy) Bast of Floyd, Daniel (Peggy) Bast of La Porte City, David (Vicky) Bast of Nashua; one daughter, Donna (Tom) Cavanaugh of Storm Lake; one brother, Clifford Bast of Nashua, along with several nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Calvin and James Bast; sister, Verna Bast.
