C. E. Laun Dies; Treasurer of Floyd County (12 August 1894 - 24 January 1948)

Charles City, Ia.-- Charles E. (Chuck) Laun, 53-year-old Floyd County treasurer, died unexpectedly at 10:45 a.m. Saturday in a local physician's office. Death was due to a heart attack.

Mr. Laun, World War I veteran and former University of Iowa football great, had gone to the office of Dr. O. H. Banton, 403 North Jackson Street, suffering from a slight pain in the chest. He collapsed and died in a chair while under examination.

Serving continuously since 1933, Mr. Laun, a Republican, was completing the final year of his eighth term as county treasurer. His memberships include the American Legion, the County Treasurers' Association of Iowa, Knights of Pythias and First Methodist Church.

LEAVES WIFE, TWO SONS -- He is survived by his widow: a son, Don Laun, at home, and Dean Laun, Iowa State College varsity end. The family home is at 1501 North Grand Avenue. At the University of Iowa during the years immediately prior to the outbreak of World War I, Mr. Laun was a varsity football back famed for his long punts. He won major letters there in 1915, 1916 and 1917, and in 1916 was the team captain.

Charles Ernest Laun was born Aug. 12, 1894, son of Edward and Christina (Scherf) Laun. He was graduated from Charles City High School in 1913. At the University of Iowa he affiliated with the Delta Chi fraternity.

SERVED IN INFANTRY-- Mr. Laun married Bernice Easterly at Nashua June 12, 1920. Before becoming treasurer he was an automobile dealer here from 1919 to 1932. He enlisted in the army during World War I at Jefferson Barricks, Mo., serving in the infantry. After a period at Camp Dodge training school, he served as bayonet instructor and camp athletic officer at Camp Pike, Ark., holding the rank of first lieutenant. He was discharged in April 1919.

The body is at the Hauser Funeral Home.
