Maxine Eggert

Date of Birth: October 14, 1917
Date of Death: August 13, 2013

Maxine D. Eggert, 95, of Charles City, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2013, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Maxine Dorothy Core Eggert was born in Hancock County on October 14, 1917, the daughter of Glen Core and Selma (Bakken) Core. Maxine graduated from Charles City High School in June 1935. After attending Waldorf College in Forest City, she worked as a secretary in the superintendent's office of the Charles City Community School District. In 1942, Maxine married Robert J. (Bob) Eggert. The couple resided in Iowa City before returning to Charles City in 1945, after Bob returned from World War II. They celebrated 68 wonderful years together and marked each day with love.

Maxine was devoted to St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, quietly serving in many capacities. In the 1960s, she donated alter coverings that she had spent many hours embroidering. In the 1980s, she wrote a history of St. John's from its inception. Both were labors of love. In the 1990s, Maxine became a founding supporter of the project to transform the childhood home of Carrie Lane Chapman Catt, a Charles City High School graduate and leading suffragist for women's right to vote, into a memorial and museum. She was a life-long member of P.E.O. Chapter JQ, where over the years she authored many dramatic readings and programs.

Throughout the years, Maxine and Bob gave generously to the community. They deeply valued the role of local institutions such as the Family YMCA, the library, the community foundation, the Floyd County Historical Society, and Charles City Arts Center. More recently, they established a scholarship under the auspices of the Charles City Education and Excellence Foundation.

Living family members include a daughter, Karen Eggert Paget of Emeryville, Calif.; four grandchildren, Tim Enwall of Boulder, Colo.; Nicholas Paget of Spokane, Wash.; Kemmie Paget Barnes of San Diego, Calif.; Teri Hansen Keeler of Niwot, Colo.; and seven great grandchildren.

Maxine was preceded in death by her husband Robert J. Eggert and daughter Barbara Eggert Hansen.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers a donation be made to St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church; the Nineteenth Amendment Society; the YMCA Foundation; the Charles City Library Foundation; or the charity of choice.
