Dorothy Stewart 1928-2013

Dorothy Stewart, 85, of Charles City, died Sunday, July 14, 2013, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Dorothy Stewart will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery at Floyd. Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday where there will be a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Wednesday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Dorothy Ann Gabel Stewart was born July 12, 1928, at Floyd, the daughter of Irvin and Mary Margaret (Schlader) Gabel. She graduated from Floyd High School in 1946. Dorothy worked for a brief time before her marriage at Salsbury Laboratories. On June 16, 1947, she was united in marriage to Wilbur Stewart at Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City. They farmed all their lives near Floyd. Dorothy was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Guild, Saint Mary’s Circle, 60+ Card Club at Floyd, a card club that met monthly for over 60 years and the Floyd coffee club.

She served as secretary of Oakwood Cemetery at Floyd for many years. Dorothy also babysat for her family as well as numerous friends. Her interests included playing cards, quilting, needlework, gardening and helping with the farm work. Family times were always special for Dorothy and she enjoyed every opportunity to share in their lives.

Living family members include her husband, Wilbur Stewart of Charles City; seven children, Roger (Wyona) Stewart of Floyd, Richard (Barbara) Stewart of Floyd, Bruce Stewart of Floyd, Barbara (Greg) Easterly of Charles City, Dennis (Nancy) Stewart of Hampton, Diane (Robert) Roepke of Hazleton and Mary (Ron) Michael of Floyd; 20 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Gerald (Jerri) Gabel of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a grandson, Dean Roepke.
