Margaret Helen Symonds Druehl was born June 1, 1917, in Charles City, Iowa, daughter of Frederick and Mabel (DeTienne) Symonds. She grew up in rural Floyd County, attended Carrville rural school and graduated from Charles City Community High School. After high school, she attended Gates Business College in Waterloo, then traveled to Washington D.C. to work as a civilian employee in the War Department. There she met and married Edward Druehl. They were united in marriage August 16, 1942. In 1946 they moved to Charles City and made their home there.

Margaret was a member of the First Congregational Church. Active in the church, she taught Sunday school, served as Stewardship chairman in Women’s Fellowship and World Missions, chairman in Church Women United and was a member of the Congregational Quilters. She was employed as secretary at the junior high school for 26 years and was a member of the Business and Professional Women. Margaret’s interests included first and foremost her family.

She was active in scouts, and made every holiday special for her children and grandchildren. She was an accomplished seamstress, enjoyed quilting, knitting, gardening, crafts, holiday decorating and reading. Margaret was an excellent cook, spoiling her family with wonderful meals and her specialties, including scrumptious pies, decorated cookies, popcorn balls, plum pudding and caramels. She loved having family gatherings and continued doing so well into her 80’s. She will be dearly missed by us all.

Living family members include two daughters, Jeanne (James) Ross of Dacono, Colo., Jan (Mike) Woods of Seymour, Ind.; a son, Gary (Mary) Druehl of Harper’s Ferry; four grandchildren, Kevin Hicks, Jacque (Seth) Poe, Kurt (Andrea) Zimmer, Jeff (Kim) Ross; two step-grandchildren, Alicia (Chris) Lea and Josh (Tiffany) Woods; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Ralph Symonds of Nashua; and a niece Elaine (Bill) Mead of Charles City.
