Edward Burkhardt, 101, of Charles City, died Thursday, May 9, 2013, at Cedar Health in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Edward Burkhardt will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday where there will be a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7 p.m., followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary.

Edward Joseph Burkhardt was born October 27, 1911, in Floyd County, the son of Joseph and Mary (Rennier) Burkhardt. He attended one room schoolhouses in Wisconsin, Canada and Iowa. On January 28, 1936, he was united in marriage to Leone Hagarty at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. They farmed all of their lives. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. His interests included fishing and going camping in the motorhome. Edward will be remembered for his ability to play the violin by ear.

Living family members include three children: Mary Jo (John) Hartogh of Elma, Stephen (Carolyn) Burkhardt of Osage and Linda (Jim) Lawless of Charles City; 10 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; two sisters, Wilma (Doug) Torres of Oceanana, Calif. and Bertha Hinmon of Clarksville, Tenn.; four sisters-in-law, Eileen Burkhardt and Patricia Hagarty both of Charles City and Kathleen Lambert and Marjorie Hagarty both of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Leone on December 24, 2010; three brothers, Frank, Robert and Clarence Burkhardt; and three sisters, Dorothy Reis, Helen Klunder and Clara Millen.
