CHARLES CITYAN DIES; HOLD RITES THURSDAY

Charles City – Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Hauser Funeral Home for Mrs. Edna West, 78, of 1103 Court Street, who died Tuesday at the Cedar Valley Hospital, where she had been a patient since January 3rd when she suffered a cerebral hemorrhage at her home. The Rev. R. N. Benedict, pastor of the First Baptist Church, will officiate, and burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Mrs. West was a lifelong resident of Charles City. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Rebekah Lodge, royal Neighbors of America and the Women’s Relief Corps.
Her husband, Bert West, died of a heart attack, August 23, 1949.

Survivors include one son, Dale West, and one grandson, Roger West, both of Rock Island, Illinois; two sisters; Mrs. Helen Foster, Charles City; and Mrs. Charles McGee of California; and 4 brothers, Vern Kennard, of Decorah; Leon Kennard, Minneapolis, Minnesota; Earl Kennard, Menahga, Minnesota; and Harry Kennard Santa Barbara, California. A son Leo, drowned in 1910 and a brother, Bird Kennard, died a few years ago.

Grace Edna Kennard was born November 1, 1872 in Floyd County, Iowa, the daughter of Arista Alonzo Kennard and Emeline (Strawn) Kennard.

She married Hubert “Bert” West, the son of Lewis West and Amanda (Butler) West.
