ROCKFORD, IOWA — Virgil Leroy Lines, 88, of Rockford, passed away March 12, 2013, at Liebe Care Center in Greene.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 16, at Zion Lutheran Church, 805 E. Main St., Rockford, Iowa. The Rev. Robert Schuerer will be officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Rockford. A visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, March 15, at Zion Lutheran Church.

Virgil was born June 18, 1924, to Edward and Louise (Schaefer) Lines in Rockford. He then farmed in Rockford. Virgil was united in marriage to Eva Clara Wood on December 21, 1944, and farmed in Rockford until 1951 when they moved to a farm in Humboldt. The couple later divorced. He worked at Hormel from 1951-1986 in Austin, Minnesota, and Fort Dodge. On March 15, 1980, he married Colleen Schoon at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pomeroy.

Virgil played basketball and baseball in school and was an avid sports fan his whole life. He enjoyed watching his sons in football, baseball, basketball and wrestling. He also enjoyed watching his grandsons play football and baseball. Virgil spent his Friday nights at the local games. He also enjoyed watching professional sports such as the Vikings, Minnesota Twins and Dallas Cowboys.

Besides sports, Virgil’s other interests included square dancing and round dancing in his younger days. He played lots of card games throughout his life; either cribbage or pinochle. Every morning Virgil looked forward to having breakfast with his friends. On Sunday mornings he could be found at church where he served as president of the council and taught high school Sunday school for many years. Virgil was an excellent mechanic who could fix anything. He will be remembered as a person who was mild mannered, soft spoken, and most of all loved to laugh.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 33 years, Colleen Lines; children, LeRoy (LaDonna) of Olathe, Kansas, Leone Lines of West Des Moines, Lynda (Lyle) Mumm of Fort Dodge, Lester (Kylikki) Lines of Helsinki, Finland, Lauren Lines of Iowa City, Valorie (Sheila) Lines of Des Moines, Debbie (Rick) Watts of Curlew, and Terry (Cathy) Schoon of Fort Dodge; sister, Lorretta Kreider; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and many other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Donald Schoon and Bill Schoon; sisters, Phyllis Schrandt and Lois Houser; brother-in-laws, Kenneth Kreider, Mike Schrandt, and Eddie Houser; former wife, Eva Lines; and great-grandson, Calvin Miller.
