Allan ‘Al’ Bode

Charles City, Iowa — Allan “Al” Bode, 67, of Charles City, died Sunday, March 10, 2013, at Rochester Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Al Bode will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday where a Scriptural Prayer Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the service.

Allan Floyd Bode was born September 26, 1945, at Algona, the son of Floyd and Marjorie (Cruikshank) Bode. He graduated from Algona High School in 1963, from the University of Iowa in 1966, and then pursued a number of post-graduate courses at various colleges and universities.

On November 13, 1965, he was united in marriage to Patricia Harker at St. Thomas More in Iowa City.

Al taught Spanish for 38 years at Charles City High School, coached debate for 20 years, retiring in 2004. He received the Golden Apple Award from KIMT-TV in 1993 and the Charles F. Martin Award in 2000. Al was instrumental in the advancement of technology at the Charles City High School. He was the ISEA designee for the ETC and was also a motivational speaker.

His interests included singing with the Old Gold Singers at the University of Iowa, directing and acting for the Stony Point Players, as well as playing the four-string guitar at area care centers and watching movies, especially foreign films. Travels included Mexico, Canada and over 40 states. He will also be remembered as an avid gardener and mushroom hunter. Family was important to him and he looked forward to spending time with his grandchildren.

Living family members include two sons, Sean (Patricia) Bode of Mazomanie, Wisconsin and Christopher (Joy) Bode of Dubuque; five grandchildren, Tristan Bode, Marissa Bode, Victoria Bode, Alexandria Bode and Sophia Bode; two brothers, Russell (Maggie) Bode of Algona and Phil (Ann) Bode of Prairieville, La.; two sisters, Janice (Chris) Christensen of Iowa City and Alice Jane (Herb) McBride of Tucson, Arizona; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Patricia on July 12, 2011.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for a scholarship fund.

The Hauser Funeral Home, 641-228-2323, in Charles City, is in charge of arrangements.
