Louisa (Rex) Clay – February 15, 1832 – March 19, 1921

Louisa Rex, second child of a family of ten children, daughter of Mary Ann and Rudolph Rex, was born in Summit County, Ohio, on February 15th, 1832, where she grew to womanhood and was united in marriage in February 1848 to John Clay.

They established their home on a farm near Manchester, Ohio, where they lived until 1856 when they stowed their family of five children, three girls and two boys, in a “prairie schooner” and together with father and mother Rex started for Iowa.

After four weeks they reached Beelar’s Grove, now Marble Rock, Iowa, where they spent the remainder of their lives. Two sons were added to their family circle in their new home, and they had the pleasure of seeing their family grow up and establish homes of their own.

They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on their farm west from Marble Rock where they lived happily until June 6th, 1908 when death separated them by calling the husband and companion.

Mother Clay and daughter Mary Ann, being left alone on the old homestead, they were persuaded to move to town, making their home in Marble Rock ever since.

The Angel of Mercy found her weary of pain and relieved her suffering at the age of eighty-nine years one month and four days, calling her spirit to join the happy circle with those gone before, leaving to mourn her loss, one daughter, Mary Ann of Charles City, who until recently has been her constant companion. Also surviving here are children Aaron Clay of Colorado; C. M. and J. R. Clay of Marble Rock; fifteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one sister; Elizabeth Wagner, of Marble Rock; and one brother, Rudolph Rex of Montana; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Father and mother Clay came to Marble Rock with a Christian faith in God, well founded, firmly establishing it in the hearts of their children who have also been faithful to the Church of Christ at Marble Rock, Iowa.

Funeral services Monday afternoon, March 21st, in charge of L. W. Inman, were held at the home of her son, Cassius M. Clay. Most appropriate music was rendered by Mrs. Patricia Fredt and duet by Mrs. John Oer and Mrs. Hazel Linns.
Interment was made at Marble Rock West Side Cemetery.
