Mary Ann Clay – December 11, 1851 – May 22, 1925

Mary Ann Clay was born in Summit County, Ohio, December 11, 1851 and passed away at her home in Charles City, May 22, 1925. Death was caused by cancer.

Miss Clay came to Marble Rock with her parents, John Clay and wife, Louisa Rex Clay, when but a child and lived the greater part of her life on their farm west of town.

They later moved into Marble Rock and purchased a home on north Hutches street. The last few years she has been spending in the Starr home at Charles City where she received every care and attention.

She leaves to mourn her departure, two brothers, John of Marble Rock and Cassius of Mt. Vernon, Washington. Her father, mother, two brothers, Aaron and William, two sisters, Mrs. Rebekah Haney and Mrs. Hattie Inman preceded her in death.

Mate Clay, as she was known to a large circle of friends and relatives, was of a retiring and quiet disposition, true and loyal to her friends, her church and her duty. For years she tenderly cared for her mother during her ill health and never spared herself in the discharge of her duties.

Funeral services were held in the Christian church at Marble Rock, and were conducted by their pastor, Rev. G. A. Hess, of Charles City, assisted by Rev. Claude Baber. Beautiful selections were sung by Mesdames Will Wilson and Charles Moore.

Her body was laid to rest in West Side Cemetery at Marble Rock.
