William “Bill” Quinlan, 95, of Forest City, formerly of 216 North Hawkeye, Nora Springs, died Sunday, October 26, 2003 at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 29 at Sheckler Colonial Chapel 114 North Hawkeye, Nora Springs with Rev. Robert Snitzer of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Crystal Lake. William Richard Quinlan was born November 10, 1907 to Jesse and Anna (Johnson) Quinlan at Minot, N.D. At an early age, the family moved to Jefferson, Iowa. William received his education in the Jefferson school system. He attended Iowa State University and received his certification as a buttermaker. He worked in creameries at Jefferson, Colwell, Cresco, and Nora Springs for 42 years.

On October 12, 1935 he was united in marriage to Mildred Zimmerman at Waverly, Iowa. After the loss of two daughters, another daughter, Marian, was born in 1945.

After retirement, he drove school bus and spent time helping others who were less able. He continued raising bees which was a lifelong hobby and later a small family business. Many people came to the house to purchase honey, some as far away as New York and California.

Mildred entered the Lake Mills Care Center in 1996 and in 1997 William joined her there. In January of 2001 he transferred to the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City, Iowa. He received excellent care in both places. His sense of humor helped him to make many friends of both residents and staff.

He was an avid baseball fan, enjoyed gardening, pitching horseshoes, and visiting with family and friends. He enjoyed the Sporting News and throughout his entire life read hometown newspapers for news of friends and current events.

William was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist Church at Jefferson and was a member of the United Methodist Church at Nora Springs. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Morning Star Lodge No. 159, A.F. & A.M. of Jefferson, Iowa.

William is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Danny and Marian Lenz, of Forest City, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mildred, in 1997, and two infant daughters. Also, all the "in-laws" preceded him: parents, Ross and Nellie Zimmerman and Katheryn Meyer Zimmerman; and brothers and sisters, Harold and Bertha Zimmerman and Marie Boggess Zimmerman, Mabel and Erich Mannetter, Maynard and Francis Zimmerman, Neva and Walter Schwyhart, and Virgil "Bud" and lda Zimmerman.
