Elijah K. ASH was born on 30 Sep 1819 in Harrison Co., West Virginia. He died on 16 Oct 1899 in Appleton, Minnesota. He was buried in Charles City, Iowa.

Death of an Octogenarian.

Elijah K. Ash, who has been a resident of this township since October, 1897, died at his home Monday evening, the 16th. Though eighty years of age, he was in good health until seized with pneumonia about ten days ago, which resulted in his death.

The deceased was a native of Virginia, born Sept. 30th 1819. He was a resident of Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa at different periods until October 1897 when he moved from Dickinson, Iowa to Appleton, having exchanged a tract of land with J. J. Little, of Madison, for the C. N. Sanders farm here. He was the father of fourteen children, all of whom are living.

Four of them, viz. Margaret I. Bussell, of Gings, Indiana; Martha J. Ash, of Seattle, Wash.; Elmira Wright, of Edmunds, Mich.; and Jacob G. Ash, of Floyd, Iowa, the the children of his first wife. The others are the children of his surviving widow. They are Sarah J. Elkins, Melvin Henry, and Ernestine R. Hartman, of Charles City, Iowa; Eva V. Peterson and Grace V. Peterson of Watertown, S.D.; Emma T. Beckwith, of Broken Bone, Nebr.; Alice A. Ash, of Gates, Nebr.; Eliza F. Valleau, of North Yakima, Wash.; A. Grant Ash, of Superior, Iowa, and A. Eri Ash, of this township. The members of the family of the deceased are his widow, his son A. Eri, and two grand-children, Miss Mabel Peterson and Miss Clara Henry. Funeral services were held at the family home at three o'clock yesterday afternoon, Rev. A. D. Smith officiating. The burial will take place at Charles City, Iowa, to which the body has been sent accompanied by his son Eri.

Elijah K. Ash.

Died at his home in Appleton, Minnesota October 16, 1899, Mr. E. K. Ash aged 80 years, 16 days.

Pneumonia caused the death of Mr. Ash. He was a Virginian by birth and came to Iowa in 1854. He remained in Iowa a short time when he moved to Minnesota where he resided until 1860. He then came back to Iowa, and Floyd county and took up his residence on a farm about 3 miles northeast of Charles City where he remained until 8 years ago, at which time he removed to Dickinson county, Iowa. He remained there until Sept. 1897 when he removed to Appleton, Minnesota.

Mr. Ash was twice married, the second wife surviving him. Five children were born to the first marriage and ten to the second, all of whom are living. A son by the first marriage, George Jacob, resides in Floyd Township, 4 1/2 miles north of Floyd. A daughter, Mrs. Margaret Bussell, resides in Rushville, Ind. The homes of the others are not known. Of the children by the second marriage three reside in Charles City, Iowa: Mrs. W. E. (Sarah) Elkins, Mrs. C. (Melissa) Henry and Mrs. S. (Ernestine) Hartman. Of the others two reside in Nebraska, Mrs. Joseph (Em) Beckwith and Mrs. J. E. (Alice) Ash. Two daughters, Mrs. J. H. (Jen) Peterson and Mrs. T. (Grace) Peterson reside in Watertown, South Dakota. Another daughter, Mrs. M. M. (Lida) Valleau resides in Ashland, Oregon. A Son, Mr. A. G. Ash, resides at Superior, Iowa and another, Eri, is at home. A number of them were present at the funeral.

The remains were brought here (Charles City, Iowa) for burial last Thursday evening. The funeral was held last Friday at 10:00 A.M. at the M. E. Church, Charles City conducted by the pastor, Rev. Dr. Troy. Interment at Riverside Cemetery.
