Bernadine "Bernie" Michael, 97, of Charles City, died Sunday, December 23, 2012, at 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Bernadine "Bernie" Michael, 97, of Charles City, died Sunday, December 23, 2012, at 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Bernie Michael will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 26, at Trinity United Methodist Church. Pastor Jim Beranek will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.

The family will greet friends at the church an hour prior to the service.

Bernadine Audrey Lockey Michael was born August 15, 1915, in South Dakota, the daughter of Harry and Martha (Paisley) Lockey. She graduated from Nashua High School.

On January 1, 1936, she was united in marriage to Cecil Michael at Charles City. Over the years they worked together selling feed and Pioneer seed corn. From 1967 to 1976 she was employed at Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Midis, Peace Circle, Heritage Club, Royal Neighbors, served as a 4-H leader and was a Floyd County volunteer.
For 11 years, Bernie and Cecil ran the Messiah food box. Bernie liked to garden and will be remembered for her beautiful flower beds. She enjoyed traveling, camping and fishing with friends. Bernie and Cecil always took a great interest in the Charles City school athletic and music activities. They enjoyed being with the youth.

Living family members include a daughter, Donna (Wendell) Patten of Charles City; a daughter-in-law, Bev (Bert) Sorensen of Grand Meadow, Minn.; five grandchildren, Julie (Brad) Longueville, Vicki (Paul) Tegland, Steven Patton, Lori (Patrick) O'Connor and Renee (Scott) Hottovy; 13 great grandchildren; and seven great great grandchildren; three brothers, Clifford (Faith) Lockey of Bassett, Dale (Joyce) Lockey of Swan, and Donald Lockey of California; a sister, Arvana Boyd of Charles City; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on September 27, 2001; a son, Richard "Dick" Michael, a great grandson, Joshua Jorgensen; a brother, Lowell Lockey; three sisters, Eleanor Klinkel, Evelyn Roethler and Martha Simerson; and several nieces and nephews.

The Hauser Funeral Home, 641-228-2323, in Charles City, is in charge of arrangements.
