LaVerne L. Ball, 87, of Waterloo, died Thursday, February 15, 2007, at Cedar Valley Hospice.
He was born August 20, 1919, in Pleasant Grove Township, Floyd County, Iowa son of Edward and Frieda Abbe Ball. He married Elizabeth Lorraine Kinney on August 17, 1950, in Waterloo. She died September 21, 1990.
LaVerne served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 through 1945. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, with a quadruple bronze star attachment, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a bronze star attachment, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory medal. He was employed as a machinist at Construction Machinery Company in Waterloo for 36 years retiring in 1981.
He is survived by two sons, Louis D. (Sue) Ball of Waterloo and Robert A. (Leonice) Ball of Gilbertville; one step-son, Thomas V. Simmons of Waterloo; six grandchildren: Dan Ball, Christy Ball, Ryan Ball (Emily Wilson), Amber (Ty Hunter) Ball, Kimberly (Jeremy) Wyborney, and Laurie Ball; two step-grandchildren, Terry Simmons and Wanda Simmons; three great-grandchildren: Tierra Hunter, Jalyn Hunter, and Jessa Hunter; one sister, Gladys Cameron of Peoria, Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his wife; two sisters, Isabelle & Bernice; and by three brothers: Lloyd, Pete, and Russell Ball.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. on Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street where there will be a 6:00 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also for an hour before services at the church on Saturday.
Memorials may be made to Cedar Valley Hospice.
