Clarissa “Clara” (Hilts) Wilkie – January 30, 1855 – February 26, 1928

#1

Mrs. Clara A. Wilkie

In Kent County, Michigan, John and Mary Jane Hilts were living when on January 30, 1855, was born to them a baby girl to whom they gave the name Clarissa.

The years came and went that brought her to the threshold of young womanhood. And on the first day of February, fifty-four years ago, she and William J. Wilkie took upon themselves the marriage vows at Shabbona, Illinois.

About eight years later the family moved into Iowa, setting at Rockford, which has since been the family's place of residence.

Two children were born to them; Ida Mary and Frank Edgar. Mr. Wilkie passed away December 14, 1886 when their baby boy was only four months old.

Mrs. Wilkie knew well the hardships of motherhood and widowhood. Many days did she toil for the sake of the children and her home, But the cares for her own loved ones ,did not close her eyes or hands to the need of her neighbors. And because of her willing helpfulness her friends came to know her and to love her.

Hence it has been their delight to reciprocate, in these later years, the kindnesses earlier shown by "Aunt Toot," as she was lovingly called.

Five weeks ago she suffered a stroke of paralysis which confined her to her bed. And on the evening of February 23 in the home of her daughter she passed into the other world.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Mrs. Emma Steuben and Mrs. Martha Holland, and one brother, Myron Hall.

She leaves to mourn her loss her two children, Mrs. T. O. Longbotham, Frank Edgar Wilkie, on brother, Thomas C. Hilts, four grandchildren, on great-grandchild, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Myron Hall, all of Rockford.

The funeral services were held from her daughter's home Sunday Afternoon, Feb. 26, at 2:30. Interment was in the Rockford Cemetery. The Rev. Charles E. Luce, pastor of the Methodist Church, was in charge.

Those who attended the funeral from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. Fred Tibbets of Waseca, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Guy Angell of Mason City and A.B. Schmidt of Manly.

CARD OF THANKS

We wish to thank our neighbors and friends for their kindness and helpfulness during the sickness and at the time of the death of our mother and sister and also those who sent the beautiful flowers.
