C. EIKENBERRY KILLED THURSDAY ON CROSSING
STRUCK WHEN TRACTOR STALLS ON R. R. TRACK

Chester H. Eikenberry, Greene, was killed instantly by a northbound passenger train near his home shortly after 3:00 o’clock last Thursday afternoon while trying to remove his stalled tractor from the tracks. He was struck on the crossing at the south edge of town and the east side of the river on the country trunk road which leads east out of Greene.

Upon the impact his body was lodged on the engine and carried approximately 270 yards from the point of the accident before the train could be stopped. A local physician was immediately summoned but Mr. Eikenberry was beyond help.

He had been working in a field next to the railroad with a tractor and drag. Crossing the tracks the tractor stopped and he evidently dismounted and disconnected the drag and climbed back up on the tractor when he was hit.

The passenger was delayed a few moments at the scene while a funeral director was called. It then pulled slowly up to the station, two and one half blocks away.

C. H. Eikenberry was born near Marble Rock March 19, 1888 and died Thursday May 6, 1948 at Greene at the age of sixty years. He was the oldest son of Frank and Maggie Eikenberry.

When a small boy he moved with his parents to Missouri for a short time, after which he moved to Floyd where he started his schooling. From there they moved to a farm near Marble Rock where he lived until his marriage.

He was united in marriage to Josie Miller on September 4, 1912. To this union were born six children. He was engaged in farming in Floyd and Butler Counties all his life until 1944 when they moved to Greene on a small acreage. He continued custom farming and trucking there until the time of his death.

Mr. Eikenberry is survived by his wife; two daughters; Mrs. Burt Boyd of Aredale; and Mrs. Jean Stephens of Charles City; four sons; Raymond of Waterloo; Myron at sea in the service; Byron of Rock Island, Illinois and Dean of Waterloo; seven grandchildren; three sisters; Mrs. Lloyd Gates of Ionia; Mrs. Blanche Vierra of Los Angeles; and Mrs. O. Fischer of Dayton; and one brother Glenn of Greene. His parents and one brother preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at the Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Charles E. Segerstern of Cumberland, former pastor of the church, officiating, and Rev. Marlin Rayburn, present pastor assisting. Music was provided by Mrs. Garth Butler at the piano and Mrs. Charles Segerstrom, vocalist.

Pallbearers were three sons, Byron, Dean and Raymond, the brother and Bert Boyd and Howard Smith. Burial was in Rosehill Cemetery.

Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Ozre Miller of Julesburg, Colorado; Joe and Ozwald Miller of Louisville, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Kenhue of Manitowoc, Wisconsin; Mr. and Mrs. Inard Kenhue of Cankanna, Wisconsin; Mr. and Mrs. Orville Fischer and Warren; Mr. and Mrs. Tony Earanowaki, all of Dayton; and Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Gates of Ionia.
