William Henry Snyder – March 29, 1848 – November 19, 1934

SNYDER FUNERAL RITES HELD
ROCKFORD CIVIL WAR VETERAN WAS WITH SHERMAN ON MARCH TO SEA

Rockford, Nov. 22 – Funeral services for William Henry Snyder, 85, Civil War Veteran, were held Tuesday afternoon at the home in charge of the Rev. E.Aa. Sabin. Military burial rites were conducted at the grave by Ivan C. Walker post of the American Legion. The Rev. P. J. LaValette, state chaplain, and Dr. H. H. Irvin, post commander, read the committal service. Lynn Carrott was in charge of the firing squad. Legionnaires who were pallbearers were F.E. Dunkelbert, Jim Ruckdashel, Carl Cunninghm, J. D. Gulick, L. V. Leigh and Fred Chambers.

Mr. Snyder was born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, March 29, 1849. He had been in poor health for several years, being confined to his bed the last three months.

When 5, he came to Forest Town, Illinois, by covered wagon with his parents, later coming to Iowa. At 15 he enlisted in Company H, Thirty-fourth regiment of the Illinois Infantry Volunteers. He was in Sherman’s march to the sea. He was honorably discharged July 12, 1865, at 17.

On March 23, 1878, he married Sylvia Erickson at Mason City. They resided at Plymouth, Greene and then came to Rockford where they lived 50 years.

Mr. Snyder was a member of the G.A.R. Charles Jay Pixley Post No. 377 of Rockford. His death leaves one comrade here of the Civil war. He was able to vote in the election this year.

He is survived by two brothers, John Snyder, Brentford, South Dakota; and C. C. Snyder of Fargo, North Dakota; one sister; Mrs. Amelia Greenwood, Vancouver, British Columbia; three children; Lydia Yerkes of Shell rock; E. L. Taylor, Waterloo; and Vera Weigand, Rockford; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. His wife died in January of this year.
