Funeral services for Rudolph E. Schwartz, 83, of Marble Rock, were held on Friday, September 25, 1992, at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Marble Rock, with Rev. D. Iles officiating. Burial was in the Hillside Cemetery in Marble Rock. Graveside military rites were conducted by Stroud Gates Post 287 American Legion of Marble Rock. Evening Masonic services were conducted by Ed Armstead Jr., Grand Warden of the Grand Lodge of Iowa, and members of Cornerstone Lodge 251 A.F. & A.M.

Rudolph Emil Schwartz was born on August 30, 1909 in Groveland Township, Tazewell County, Illinois. He was the son of Emil and Louisa "Lucy" Schwartz. He died on Tuesday, September 22, 1992, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City, Iowa.

At an early age he and his family moved to Iowa, settling west of Marble Rock, where he received his education in the rural schools nearby. He joined his father in farming. In 1939 they moved into Marble Rock, where they started a joint blacksmith and auto repair business.

He was inducted into the U.S. Army on June 26, 1942, where he served with the 89th Division Artillery in the Rhinelands and central Europe during World War II. He was discharged on November 13, 1945.

On February 1, 1941 he was united in marriage to Muriel McFadden at the United Methodist Church in Marshalltown. Mr. and Mrs. Schwartz have made their home in Marble Rock since their marriage. He was engaged in the auto repair business until his retirement in 1985.

He was a member of Cornerstone Lodge No. 251 A.F. & A.M., being initiated as an Entered Apprentice on February 9, 1954. He was passed to Fellow Craft on March 16, 1954, and raised as a Master Mason on April 20, 1954. He faithfully served in all the offices of the Lodge, and was presented certificates of Mason Instructor and District Lecturer of the Grand Lodge of Iowa.

Rudy was a member of the Marble Rock Fire Department from 1940 to 1974, served on the Marble Rock City Council for many years, was a charter member of the Marble Rock Lions Club, and was a member of the Stroud Gates Post 387 American Legion and the Marble Rock ABC. He was affiliated with the United Methodist Church.

His special interests included traveling, spending winters in Texas, and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Muriel, of Marble Rock; one son, Donald and his wife Marcia Schwartz of Mason City; two granddaughters, Lisa of Mason City, and Sara and her fiance, Marlin Perry of Garner. Also surviving are two sisters, Lucylle Anderson of Tucson, Arizona, and Betty Schriner of South Bend, Indiana, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials may be directed to the Masonic Scholarship Fund or to the family.
