Matilda Schmidt, 83, of Osage, Iowa, died on Tuesday, September 22, 1992, at the Mitchell County Memorial Hospital in Osage.
Funeral services were held on Saturday at the Eden Presbyterian Church near Rudd. Rev. J. Bates officiated and burial was in the Eden Presbyterian Cemetery.
Matilda Schmidt was born on December 23, 1908 in Rudd township, Floyd county, Iowa. She was the daughter of William G. and Hattie (Muller) Bortz. She was educated in the Rudd school system and graduated from Rudd High School in 1926. She attended Iowa State University in Ames for three years. She taught Science and Home Economics at the Otranto High School. Matilda married Justus E. Schmidt on July 23, 1930 at her parents' home in Rudd Township. They farmed in the Floyd and Rudd area. Lilly was an Elder of the Eden Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the United Presbyterian Women. She was active in 4-H leadership. She had been a resident of the Faith Home in Osage for the past two and a half years.
Survivors include three daughters: Bonnie Norby of Osage, Phyllis Schlobohm of Mill Valley, California, and Barbara Tjernell of Novato, California; two sons, Francis of Nora Springs, and Bill of Rudd; one sister, Doris Brandau, of Osage; 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Justus in 1952; an infant daughter, Carolyn; and a brother, Alvin Bortz.
