Richard Eugene Haus – September 21, 1934 – February 13, 2010

SALEM, Ore. Richard Eugene Haus was born in Charles City, Iowa to Matilda and Arnold Haus on Sept. 21, 1934, and died at home surrounded by his wife and friends in Salem, Ore., Feb. 13, 2010.

Dick graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Charles City in 1952. He worked as a systems analyst and programmer for the White Motor Company in Chicago, as well as Berg Manufacturing where he was a department supervisor.

After marriage to Betty Lou McChesney in 1965, Dick headed west with Betty and her parents. They all settled near Veneta, where they raised quarter horses and the Hauses attended the University of Oregon.

An avid Duck fan, Dick graduated from the University of Oregon in 1974 with a degree in Public Affairs with a minor in Business Management. He and Betty moved to Salem following graduation where he worked for Salem Keizer Public Schools until his retirement.

Dick loved the theater and spent many hours on the technical side building sets for Pentacle Theater, Salem Theatre of the Performing Arts and the Brush College Playhouse. In the past he was a member of the AAUW and supported Betty in both her role as branch president in Salem and her work as the State Public Policy Chair.

Dick and Betty loved to camp and hike and in later years spending time in their motor home going to the coast and cruising to far off destinations such as India and Egypt. The Teton Mountains and Jackson Hole, Wyo., were favorite destinations. They did a cross country trip and have fond memories of trying to park the motor home in Boston.

As Dicks health declined, he spent hours keeping up on current affairs with magazines and the ever-present TV news. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus of St. Josephs Catholic Church.

Dick was predeceased by his parents and a brother James.

In addition to his wife Betty, Dick is survived by his children from a prior marriage: Laura Sabby of Manly and son Pete (Debbie) Gallup of Charles City; a brother, Harold (Betty) Haus; nephew Howard (Kathy) Haus of Charles City; niece Sandy (Greg) Hyde of St. Paul and nephew David Haus of Minneapolis. Grandchildren in Iowa include Briana Sabby and Jason (Angela) and Thomas (Alyssa) Gallup. Great-grandchildren in Iowa are Marisa, Carson and Alexis Gallup and Avery and Zoey Sabby. He is also survived by three great nephews.

Dick will be missed by numerous friends, including Lori Rist, his longtime friend and caregiver, and his cocker spaniel DeeDee.

A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, Feb. 20, at 1 p.m. at St. Josephs Catholic Church Salem Ore., where he was a member. In lieu of flowers, please give to a charity of your choice or to the Educational Foundation of American Association of University Women in care of Salem Branch AAUW, PO Box 2144, Salem , OR 97308.

Private interment will be in Mt. Crest Abbey Mausoleum.

Arrangements are by City View Funeral Home.
