Gladys B. Davis died Thursday, August 20, 1992, at the Nora Springs Care Center. A service of remembrance and celebration will be held on Sunday, August 30, 1992, at the Nora Springs Christian Church. The body was deeded to the University of Iowa Hospitals. Memorials may be given to the Gladys B. Davis Memorial Fund.

Gladys was born on August 26, 1900 near Ireland, Indiana. In 1919 she moved to Jewell, Iowa, where she married Floyd Davis in 1922. During World war II she worked at the Ankeny Ordinance Plant commuting over 100 miles a day. Following the war she worked for the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company as a night telephone operator while also working part time as a sales clerk and later as a waitress.

She was an extremely active volunteer. She taught a youth Sunday School class for many years. She was recently honored as a 20-year charter member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), beginning in California where she lived in retirement before coming to Nora Springs in 1987.

Sewing, cooking, music and playing games were all activities she enjoyed and were reflected in her volunteering. She did sewing for the Nora Springs Care Center, Charlie Brown Day Care, NSFR School and the American Cancer Society Discovery Shop, as well as for church bazaars and friends. As a member of the Nora Springs City Band, she was the oldest musician in the 1989 Band Festival parade. She provided weekly cookies for the Youth Video Club and pies for other activities of the Christian Church, of which she was a member. A highlight for her was the weekly meal she prepared for friends who came to play games in her apartment.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Dr. Fred and Phyllis Davis, Brooklyn, Michigan, and Ken and Doris Davis of Nora Springs; four grandchildren: Jerry Wilkinson, Fred B. Davis, Janelle Condra and Lori Soule; three great-grandchildren, Allissa and Seth Condra and Jared Soule; and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters and two brothers.
