Joseph Gashel
October 14, 1847 – September 15, 1927
Joseph Gashel** was born in Bavaria, Germany, on October 14, 1847, and came to America with his parents when six years of age and settled in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin.
On January 21, 1867, he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Kolb of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin.
In October 1878, they moved to Nora Springs and lived there until April 1904, when they moved to Mason City, where they resided until April 1927. They moved back to Nora Springs to be nearer their children.
After an illness of five weeks Mr. Gashel passed away on September 15, 1927.
After nearly 61 years of wedded life, he leaves to mourn his loss a widow and 11 children as follows: Anna Gashel, the wife, and the following children, John Gashel and Anna Ueker of Nora Springs, Mary Carman and Ida Govro of Rockford, Emma Rodrian of Rock Falls, Edward G., Joseph A. and E.J. Gashel of Mason City, Jacob F. Gashel of Davila Lake, No. Dakota, Julia Ihde, Anchorville, Mich., and Adolph Gashel of Cedar Falls. The six sons were the pall bearers and carried their father to his last resting place.
The funeral was held from the St. Josph Catholic church and burial was in the Catholic cemetery here.
Relatives from a distance in attendance were Andrew Kolb and son Leo, Jos. R. Geschel and Jennie Zahn of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, and Ida Lillie of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and others from St. Benedict, Algona and Wesley.

**Note: The oldest sons changed the name from Geschel to Gashel and this is the only branch that uses the Americanized version. Joseph and Anna's tombstones use "Gashel". The eldest son, George who died an infant in Wisconsin is buried under "Geschel", at St. Peter's cemetery at Beaver Dam.
