Eureka -- Dean W. Albee, 51, owner of the W. C. Albee Lumber Co. here, died Wednesday in a Spokane Hospital after an extended illness.
The youngest graduate in the history of Lincoln County High School – he was graduated shortly after his 15th birthday – he had had a colorful career in four nations.

He attended Linfield and Washington State colleges and was graduated in mining engineering in 1930 from the New Mexico School of Mines. He worked as a mining engineer in Peru for two years and went to the Philippines in 1933.

A survivor of the Bataan “Death March” in World War II, he was interned for three years in the Japanese military prison camp at Cabanatnam.

After his release at the end of the war he owned and operated a distillery at Santa Maria Bulocan in the Philippines before returning to the mining industry.

He returned to Eureka for the first time in 14 years in 1947 to visit while on his way to another mining project in Colombia.
In 1948 he returned from South America to join his father in the lumber business.

Born in Rockford, Iowa, in 1906, he came to Eureka with his parents in 1908. He was the only child of the late Mr. and Mrs. Willard C. Albee. The elder Mr. Albee, founder of the lumber company, also was an early-day Eureka merchant.

Surviving are his wife, Sinforosa S. Albee, (a native of the Philippines’) at the home; an adopted daughter, Mrs. Lucy A. Pittman, Seattle, and a grandson, Joseph.

Mr. Albee was a member of the Roman Catholic Church and was affiliated with the American Miners’ Institute of Technology.

Funeral services are to be announced. Burial will be in Conrad Memorial Cemetery in Kalispell. The body is at Hennessey’s in Spokane.
