Vera R. Shanks, 94, of Nora Springs, Iowa, died on Saturday, May 8, 1993 at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday at United Methodist Church, Nora Springs, with Rev. R. Pippert officiating. Burial was in Spring Grove Cemetery.

Vera R. Shanks was born on July 21, 1898, in Nora Springs, Iowa, the daughter of Joe and Anna (Cottrill) Tatum. She married Kenneth S. Shanks on March 10, 1920, in Nora Springs. She grew up and spent all her life in Nora Springs, where she and her husband farmed until his death in 1963.

She graduated from Nora Springs High School in 1916, and attended Iowa State Teachers College.

She played the organ at United Methodist Church in Nora Springs, for 40 years, and also accompanied soloists and musical groups at church and school. She was a member of the Easter Star and United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one son, Duane Shanks and his wife, Edna, Nora Springs; one grandson, Gary Shanks and his wife, Candace, Tipton; one step-granddaughter, Mrs. Scott (Rhonda) George, West Des Moines; one great-granddaughter, Allison Shanks, Tipton; and one brother Dawes Tatum, Nora Springs.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister, Leona Hansen; and one brother, Claude Tatum.
