"Matt" J. Schmitt, 82, a resident of rural Rockford, Iowa, died Thursday morning, May 13, 1993, in Mason City, Iowa.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday morning at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Roseville, Iowa; Rev. D. Rausch celebrated the mass. Burial was in the St. Mary's Cemetery, and Hauser Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. A parish rosary was recited Friday evening at the funeral home.
Mathias John Schmitt was born on June 7, 1910 in Union Township, Floyd county, Iowa, the son of Mathias and Katherine Merfeld Schmitt. He received his education in the rural school near his home.
On July 2, 1936, he married Vera Einck, in Charles City. She died in 1970. He later married Betty J. Hewitt, who also preceded him in death. He farmed in the Marble Rock area all of his life. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Farm Bureau.
Living family members include six sons: Norman of Rudd, Jerome of Charles City, Donald of Grinnell, Arthur of Rockford, and Walter and Clarence, both of Marble Rock; four daughters: Margaret Trenary of Blue Earth, Minnesota, Elizabth Schmitt-Wagner of Rockford, Ellen Flaherty of Algona, and Barbara Schmitt of Chicago, Illinois. Other family include two brothers, Bernard of Charles City and Edward of Rockwell; two sisters, Christina Brunner of Marble Rock and Stella Fulaler of Lady Lake, Florida; 25 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, both wives and two brothers.
