Long-time Nora Springs businessman, Norman "Smokey" Schmolke, 65, died at his home in Nora Springs on Monday.

He was a well-known fixture in business in the community. He opened Smokey's Shell Gas Sation and operated it for 22 years until 1973, when he opened Smokey's Foods on South Hawkeye in Nora Springs.

On September 12, 1981, fire destroyed the building but on September 15, 1982 he reopened the store at a new location at 14 S. Hawkeye.

On October 26, 1989, his life-long wife and partner, Gloria died.

Smokey continued to run the business until his untimely death.

The business community mourns the passing of a fine gentleman and businessman.

Norman J. "Smokey" Schmolke, 65, of Nora Springs, Iowa, died on Monday at his home.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at the Nora Springs United Methodist Church, in Nora Springs, with Rev. R. Pippert officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.

There will be full military honors conducted at the cemetery by the Nora Springs American Legion Post $449.

Sheckler Colonial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Norman was born March 19, 1928, in Nora Springs, the son of Fred and Doris (Grandy) Schmolke. He married Gloria G. Hadley on May 17, 1947 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.

Norman "Smokey" was born and raised in Nora Springs and he served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He then worked for Oliver Corp. in Charles City until opening Smokey's Shell gas station in Nora Springs. He operated the station for 22 years, until 1973 when he purchased Smokey's Food. In 1982, the grocery store moved to its present address and changed its name to Smokey's Clover Farm.

He loved his grandchildren. Smokey enjoyed visiting with people and spent most of his time at the grocery store.

Norman was a member of the Nora Springs United Methodist Church and the American Legion Post #449.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Lester (Patty) Climer, Spencer; three grandsons: Ryan, Tyler, and Cory Climer, all of Spencer; one sister, Grace Ann Lockhart of Coos Bay, Oregon; and many very special friends.

Smokey was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Gloria, on October 26, 1989; four brothers, Gordon, Charles, Arnold and Burton; and two sisters, Dawn and Kay.
