Noel R. "Monty" Montgomery, 77, of Mason City, Iowa, died on Thursday, June 17, 1993 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A funeral Mass was held on Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Rev. C. Ries officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Charles City, Iowa, with military graveside honors by Nora Springs American Legion Post 449.

Noel R. Montgomery was born on March 1, 1916, a son of John and Stella Mae (Murdock) Montgomery, in Jackson, Minnesota. He attended school at Jackson, then graduated from Charles City High School.

He was inducted into the Air Corp and served overseas in the European Campaign Theater during World War II. He received numerous campaign ribbons and medals.

After his honorable discharge, he was united in marriage to M. Veronica "Skip" Greenwood. She preceded him in death on September 4, 1971.

In 1945, the family moved to Nora Springs where he co-owned the G and M Grocery Store and later worked as a custodian for the Nora Springs-Rock Falls school system for 20 years. He then started working as a custodian for North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City, working there for 12 years until his retirement in 1978.

He was united in marriage to Maxine Johnson in Des Moines. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, taking care of his two cars and participating in activities sponsored by various organizations. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City, American Legion Post 449 and Kiwanis Club and was a volunteer fireman, all in Nora Springs.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine Montgomery of Mason City; two sons, Michael J. and wife Linda Montgomery of Arizona City, Arizona, and Patrick T. and wife Barbara Montgomery of Ames; four granddaughters: Keri and Tiber Paige Montgomery of Arizona City, and Kelly Jo and Kaye Marie Montgomery of Ames; five step-children, Bob, Richard and Pat Petersen of Mason City and Jean and Larry Johnson of Hanlontown; seven step-grandchildren: Sally Lee Wright of Sheffield, Renee Petersen of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Colleen Brady and Nancy and Kathy Petersen of Mason City and Lauri Dvorak of Lincoln, Nebraska; five step-great-grandchildren: Chris and Jody Lee Wright of Sheffield, Spencer Brady of Des Moines, Kayla Petersen of Des Moines, and Nicholas Noel Dvorak of Lincoln, Nebraska; and two sisters, Alice Lusk of Carlisle and Viola Webster of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, of 33 years, and a grandson, James Montgomery.
