Margaret Tolliver, 81, of Charles City, died Friday, August 3, 2012, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Margaret Tolliver will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Church. Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday where the Rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. and a Scripture Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Tuesday at the church an hour prior to the Mass.

Margaret Ann Merfeld Tolliver was born June 10, 1931, at Greene, the daughter of George and Cecelia (Loughren) Merfeld. She attended Sacred Heart Academy in Greene through the eighth grade and graduated from Greene High School in 1949. On July 24, 1951, she was united in marriage to Russell Tolliver. To this union four children, Michael, Diane, Janet and Judy were born. While attending high school she worked part time for the Greene Telephone Company as a switchboard operator. Following graduation she started work at First Security Bank in Charles City where she worked until Michael was born.

Margaret was a stay at home mom for 14 years. In February of 1967 she started working at Floyd County Memorial Hospital where she worked over 25 years, retiring in 1992 as Personnel Director. Margaret and Russell made their home in Charles City where they farmed and raised their family.

It was a busy life with family, chores, household duties, vegetable gardening, yard and flowers to care for plus her full time job at the hospital. Family and friends were a very important part of her life and she spent time entertaining guests, having friends in for coffee or a game of cards, spent time visiting the elderly or sick and for many years helped deliver Meals On Wheels.

Margaret was an active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Anthony Circle, Friends Neighborhood Club, Retirees Hospital Group, Heritage Club and enjoyed taking many trips with her husband over the years. She also belonged to several card groups, refinished furniture and in later years spent time reading and watching sports on television, especially the Hawkeyes. But most of all she enjoyed all her family and the special gatherings in her home over the years. She commented, "God has blessed us with a wonderful family".

Living family members include her husband, Russell Tolliver of Charles City; four children, Michael (LuAnn) Tolliver of Minnetonka, Minnesota, Diane (Steven) Pelhan of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Janet (Randy) Stangl of Charles City and Judy (Vernon, Jr.) King of Albuquerque, New Mexico; five grandsons; three great grandchildren; three step grandchildren; six step great grandchildren; a brother, Maurice (Sharon) Merfeld of Nashua; and a sister Lucille (Tom) Cronin of Nashua.

She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and a sister.

CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Margaret Tolliver, 81, of Charles City, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2012, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.
