JOHN EWALD, 69, DIES AT MARBLE ROCK; RITES HELD IN M. E. CHURCH
Marble Rock, Feb. 9 – John Ewald, Sr., 69, died at his home here Tuesday morning after a long illness.
Funeral services were held this afternoon at the Marble Rock Methodist Church in charge of the pastor, the Rev. Leslie Faris and the Rev. G. A. Hess of Charles City.He is survived by his wife, two daughters; Mrs. Elmer Lines and Mrs. Hershel Handley and four sons; William; John;Henry and Edgar, all of Marble Rock.

John Ewald , eldest son of John and Marie Ewald, was born March 30, 1864, at Barndt, West Prussia, Germany, and passed away of cancer at his home in Marble Rock, IA. February 7, 1933.
He was baptized and carefully instructed in the Lutheran faith. He is buried at West Side Cemetery, Marble Rock,IA.
After he left home in Germany, he served as a sailor for several years and during that time he made 23 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. After spending one year in New York, he came to Iowa arriving in 1886. On the 29th day of December 1887, he was united in marriage to Miss Rebecca Roschen, a daughter of William and Mattie Janins Roschen. To this union four sons and two daughters were raised.
Thirty-six years of his life were spent on his farm north of Marble Rock. The remaining nine years of married life were spent in retirement from his farm labors at his home in Marble Rock.
At his death, John Ewald had one brother and two sisters living in Germany, and a brother, August, living in Adams, MN. He lost a brother in Germany in World War I. He held several offices in the Odd Fellows and Woodman Lodges. The morning of his death many were heard to remark "A good man has left us."
