Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 30, 1993 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Marble Rock, for Mattie Ewald. Rev. John Albrecht was the officiating clergy.

Burial was in the Westside Cemetery, Marble Rock, with Reid's Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements.

Music at the service was provided by Mrs. Renee Parker, organist, and Jack Reid, who sang, "Beyond the Sunset" and "How Great thou Art." Casketbearers were: Thamas Ewald, Max Handley, Kenneth Fisher, Maynard Ewald, Bob Enabnit, and Weldon Sult. Honorary casketbearers were: Dick Ewald, Maynard Kingery, Robert Howard, Eugene Ewald, Ralph Behnke and Volney Nash.

Mattie Johnson was born on December 25, 1898 at Blue Earth, Minnesota, the daughter of Martin Levi and Mary (Collison) Johnson. She died on Wednesday, January 27, 1993 at the Indianola Good Samaritan Center at Indianola, Iowa.

She received her education in the Blue Earth public schools, and as a young lady worked in a restaurant and grocery store in Blue Earth.

On January 9, 1919, she was united in marriage to John Ewald in Blue Earth. Following their marriage they moved to Marble Rock, Iowa, where they farmed northeast of town, until their retirement in 1964, when they moved into town.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Marble Rock, and various church circles, and the Royal Neighbors. She enjoyed embroidery and crocheting as a pastime.

She leaves to join her husband, John, who died on May 2, 1968; two sons, Donald, in infancy, and Claude in 1985; her parents; and one sister, Mabel Stroud.

Living family members include two daughters, Mrs. Stan (Marvel) Hunter of Des Moines and Mrs. Robert (Eleanor) Riemcke of Chusting, Minnesota; a daughter-in-law, Connie Ewald of Rockford; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
