Alberta "Jean" Benedict, 87, of Charles City died Tuesday, February 21, 2012, at Floyd County Medical Center, Charles City.

Funeral services for Jean Benedict will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 24, 2012, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 4-7 p.m. Thursday. Visitation continues Friday an hour prior to the service at the church.

Alberta Jean Roepke Benedict was born December 25, 1924, in Oelwein, the daughter of Lewis C. and Vera E. (Trumbauer) Roepke. She grew up in Waterloo and graduated from West High School in January of 1943. Following graduation, she worked for one year at John Deere Tractor Company. In August 1944 she entered nurses training at Moline Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing under the Cadet Nurse Corp. with a three month affiliation at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. She graduated in 1947. While on vacation in 1945, she met her future husband. On June 23, 1948, she was united in marriage to Edwin Benedict at St. John Lutheran Church, Waterloo. To this union, four children were born. After moving to Charles City, she worked at Cedar Valley Hospital which is now Floyd County Hospital until retirement in 1989. She will be remembered as a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, and a nurse who was always "on call" whenever the family needed nursing care.

Living family members include her husband of 63 years, Edwin; three children, Rebecca (Gary Miessler) Benedict of Northfield, Minn., Randall (Sue) Benedict of Fridley, Minn., Greg (Yvonne) Benedict of Mason City; six grandchildren, Shelby (Joel Pals) Zirbel, Katie Zirbel, Ben (Anna) Zirbel, Nick (Lacey) Zirbel, twins: Rachel and Naomi Miessler; three great grandsons, Anthony Zirbel, Jamison Zirbel, Ethan Zirbel; one great granddaughter, Emma Jean Zirbel; two step-grandchildren, Sean Samford and his three children, Jessica (Larry) Conley and their three children; a son-in-law, Jim (Suzi) Zirbel of Charles City; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Roepke of Midland, Tex.; and a large extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Cynthia Zirbel in 2004; two brothers, Robert Roepke in 1996, and John Roepke in 2007.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Cindy Zirbel Christian Preschool Memorial Fund at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main St., Charles City, Iowa, 50616, or the American Cancer Society would be appreciated.

CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Alberta Jean Benedict, 87, of Charles City died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, at Floyd County Medical Center, Charles City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charles City. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.
