Arlene Eleanor was born June 6, 1919, the daughter of Edward A. and Emma Koehler in Ulster Township, Floyd County. She was one of six children. She graduated with the class of 1936 from Rockford High School and then received her teaching certificate from the State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.

For the next eight years she taught at several rural schools in the North Iowa area. On June 17, 1945, she was united in marriage to George Trettin at Zion Lutheran Church. They made their home and raised their family over the next 66 years, living at their current home for many years.

Arlene remained active in her church, being a Sunday School teacher, a member of WELCA church circles, and being an adviser for 20 years with the Young Mothers Group.

Her favorite things to do were to provide for and nurture others. She spent many hours cooking and canning produce from her large vegetable garden. When it came time to freeze and preserve, it was usually a family affair with all the children helping.

One of Arlene's loves was cooking and recipe hunting. Often her evening hours were spent browsing through magazines looking for new dishes to try out on her family. Later in life, her large family meal spreads were the makings of legend.

As her family matured, Arlene's gardening interest shifted to flowers, lots and lots of flowers. She was also an avid painter of ceramics and wall paintings with her rose portraits being real enough to smell. She loved little children and often would stop and talk to them.

Arlene is survived by her husband, George, Rockford; three of their surviving children, Constance "Connie" and her husband Roger Baylor, Sherrill; Carol Boring, Orcas Island, Wash.; Karen Trettin, Charles City, (daughter-in-law), Timothy and his wife Denyce Trettin, Rockford; nine grandchildren, Jill (Paul) Skyles and Susan (Nathan) Hedlund, Josh, Jeremy, Zachary and Katrina Boring, Kelly and Cole Trettin and Ashley Trettin; six great-grandchildren; and her brother Donald and wife Liz Koehler, Rockford, and sister-in-law Myra Koehler, Charles City.

Her parents, son Michael Trettin, son-in-law Mel Boring, sisters Wilma Damgaard and Mildred Kruse, and brothers Lloyd and Dale Koehler preceded Arlene in death.
