SPRING PARK, MINNESOTA — Elaine Butterfield, 84, died Friday, November 11, 2005, at the Presbyterian Home on Lake Minnetonka at Spring Park, Minn., peacefully in her sleep.

Elaine was born Nov. 30, 1920, the daughter of Wheeler and Blanche Musser at Oberlin, Kan. The family moved to Charles City in 1928, and she graduated from the high school there in 1938.

She became a Linotype operator and worked at several newspapers in Michigan and Iowa.

In 1944, Elaine married Allan Butterfield, U.S. Navy, in California. Allan was also from Charles City. They had four children.

The Butterfields came to Mason City after the war and operated the A&W Root Beer Drive-in at the corner of South Federal and Seventh Street Southwest in the 50s and 60s. The family moved to the Minneapolis area, where they later divorced.

Elaine worked at the Minneapolis Star Tribune in Linotype work. She retired and moved to Harlingen, Texas. When her health declined, she moved to the nursing home in Minnesota, the Presbyterian Home.

Surviving are daughters, Alleene Butterfield, RN, Mound, Minn., Barbara (Lloyd) Thiesfeld, South Fork, Colo., Nancy (Clyde) Bayne, New Castle, Colo.; a son, Allan (Dianna) Butterfield Jr., Farmington, Minn.; and a brother, Elwin Musser, of Mason City. There are six grandchildren.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Thelma Deneau.

Memorial services are pending. The Huber Funeral Home of Mound, Minnesota, is in charge of arrangements.
