ALFRED E PETERSON, 79 SUCCUMBS

Clear lake – A. E. Peterson, 79, dean of Clear Lake Merchants, died early Friday at a Clear Lake nursing home. He has owned and operated the Peterson Rexall Drug since 1913.

He had been ill for the past few weeks, but had lived in the nursing home for several years.

Mr. Peterson was one of the oldest practicing pharmacists in the state and had been so recognized several times by Iowa governors. His last citation was made by Governor William Beardsley.

Alfred E. Peterson was born June 4, 1880, in Freeborn County, Minnesota, the son of Hans and Meta Kirstin Peterson. He attended schools of the county graduating from high school there. He was graduated from a pharmaceutical school in Chicago, receiving his license on June 4, 1903.

He opened a drug business in Spencer and lost it in the first Spencer fire. Later he operated a drug store at Charles City, coming to Clear Lake in 1913 and managed the drug store for the Mark White estate. He later purchased the store and building.

He was married to Ethel Bascombe, April 18, 1906, at Charles City. His wife assisted him in the store for many years until her health failed her.

Surviving are his wife, one daughter; Mr. C. B. (Madeline) Hayden, Forest City; one brother, P. C. Peterson, Alhambra, California. Three brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the Ward Funeral Home. The Rev. John Hedger, rector of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Mr. Peterson was a member of the Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce.

Arthur E. Peterson, married Ethel Bascombe, the daughter of Thomas B. Bascombe and Alice Elizabeth (Penney) Bascombe. Ethel was born January 22, 1880 in Mitchell Co., Iowa and died January 8, 1968 in Clear Lake.

Their daughter Madeline (Peterson) Hayden was born June 2, 1909 in Charles City, Floyd, Iowa and died September 13, 1970 in Forest City, Winnebago, Iowa. She married Ceylon B. Hayden.
