CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Unis A. Hughes, 88, of Charles City, died Wednesday, December 7, 2011, at Port Charles Assisted Living in Charles City.

Funeral services for Unis Hughes will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 12, at First Congregational Church. Pastor Debra Lincoln from Colwell United Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will be in Beckwith Cemetery, rural Colwell.

Friends may call from 3-6 p.m. Sunday at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City and Monday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Unis A. Hughes, age 88, of Charles City, died Wednesday, December 7, 2011, at Port Charles Assisted Living in Charles City.

Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City and Monday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Unis Alene Rivers Hughes was born September 9, 1923, in Cedar Township of Floyd County, the sixth daughter of Alfred and Myrtie (Dawley) Rivers. She attended Ballard Country School and then graduated from the Charles City High School in 1941, having earned a teaching certificate.

On September 18, 1941, she was united in marriage to Thomas Hughes at Orchard. After farming and raising their seven children, Tom and Unis celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2001. With the exception of the three years at Port Charles, Unis lived alongside the Little Cedar River her entire life.

Unis was a member of the United Church of Christ in Colwell, the Women's Fellowship, the Double Dozen Club. She enjoyed music and played the piano, accompanying her children while they practiced for choir, band, orchestra and church events. Unis was a loyal fan of the Lawrence Welk Show. Family was always important to Unis and she looked forward to sharing her life with her children and grandchildren.

Living family members include seven children, James (Laura) Hughes of Charles City, John (Tammy) Hughes of Richwood, Ohio, David Hughes of Muscatine, Carol (Dick) Savage of Stilwell, Kans., Nancy Recker of Humboldt, Lori (Rick) Wood of Eldora, Gina (Tom) Trepes of Wilton, Wis.; 19 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents in 1959 and 1969; her husband, Thomas on May 21, 2002; five sisters, Ruby Pollock in 1993, Lois Mark in 1988, June Lynch in 1981, Avis Brown in 1992 and Opal Porter in 1985; two brothers, Ryal Rivers in 1993 and Dean Rivers in 2011; a cousin, Irma Rivers Pullin in 2004; and two sisters-in-law, Geneva Byers in 2004 and Evelyn Sturdivant in 2006; a son-in-law, Ron Recker in 2003.
