Della Matilda Shevik was born on February 18, 1922, on the family farm near Protivin, Iowa, to Edward and Zephie (Zahasky) Nockels. She was the only daughter of two children born to her parents. She attended and graduated from Rudolphinum High School in Protivin.

Della met Raymond E. Shevik at the Inwood Dance Hall in Spillville, Iowa, and on Nov. 4, 1942, the couple was united in marriage at the Catholic church in Protivin. They continued to enjoy dancing to all types of music and assisting each other in the day to day operation of their grain and dairy farm. Della and Raymond became the proud parents of a daughter, Marlise, and a son, Gary. The family lived on their farm south of New Hampton from 1954 until 1984, at which time they relocated to Charles City. Della was employed as a cook for the New Hampton Community Schools for 16 years, retiring in 1984.

Della’s life was centered around her family and her membership at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. She was very active in the St. Francis Circle, the Women’s Guild, the Rosary Society and the Lay Carmelites at her church. Della was also a courtesy volunteer at Floyd County Memorial Hospital, an active participant in the TLC sewing club, and a member of the Charles City Farm Bureau.

Della was a loving wife and devoted mother. Her children claim that Della baked wonderful homemade bread and kolaches, never forgot to send birthday cards to her family, and treasured her time in preparations for holidays, especially Christmas. Some of Della’s favorite hobbies and leisure activities included quilting, sewing, reading, flower and vegetable gardening, visiting with relatives and friends, and in earlier years, Wapsipinicon River fishing with her children.

Della was a gentle and quiet woman, a hard worker who was always kind and willing to assist anyone she could at any time. She ministered to many at her church in a variety of ways and was self-sacrificing and patient. Della’s grandchildren will recall that they loved sharing time with their grandmother and could always count on eating fresh-baked goods. All her family members will cherish the quilts and sewing items given to them by Della with love.

Della will be dearly missed by all who have shared in her life.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Raymond E. Shevik of Charles City; her daughter, Marlise Shevik of Mason City; her son, Gary (Jan) Shevik of Rochester, Minn.; and her brother, Alvin (Grace) Nockels of Mason City. Della will also be sadly missed by her four grand-children: Melissa (Matt) Sahlstrom of Maple Grove, Minn., Laurie Shevik of Chandler, Ariz., Brett Shevik of Duluth, Minn., and Jennifer Shevik of Rochester, Minn.; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Preceding Della in death are her parents, Edward and Zephie Nockels.
