Elmer P. Kalvig

MASON CITY — Elmer P. Kalvig, 74, of Clear Lake and formerly of Mason City, died Thursday (Dec. 1, 2005) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services for Elmer will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City, with Pastor Patty Aurand of First Congregational United Church of Christ officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in Elmwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the Elmer P. Kalvig Memorial Fund.

Elmer was born January 9, 1931, in Nora Springs, the son of Vern J. and Anna Marie (Theil) Kalvig. He attended school in Mason City and then entered the United States Marine Corps on Dec. 14, 1951, and was honorably discharged on Dec. 2, 1953. Elmer was awarded the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars.

Elmer was united in marriage to JoAnn Doris Kramer on Feb. 26, 1952, in Northwood. He was employed by the Burchinal Co-op Society, his father-in-law, Harold Kramer, and Builder’s Supply. Elmer retired from the Farmers Co-op Elevator of Clear Lake where he was a grain specialist.

Survivors include his daughters and their husbands, Barbara (James) Farghum of Mason City and Carolyn (Steven) Shoger of Nora Springs; son, Douglas Kalvig of Mason City; grandchildren, Christopher (Holly) Farghum of Mason City, Nicholas Farghum of Mason City, Bethany Shoger of Nora Springs, Samantha Shoger of Nora Springs and Clay Kalvig of Rockwell. He is also survived by his sisters, Verna (Gene) Weitzel of Northwood, Rachel (Joseph) Gataletto of Orlando, Fla., and Dorothy (James) Schoolcraft of Hudson; his brothers, Donald, Arthur and Carl Kalvig, all of Northwood, and David Kalvig of Mason City; and his very special friend, Pauline Garcia of Clear Lake; 23 nieces; 30 nephews; many great-nieces and great-nephews; sisters-in-law, Barb Halsne, Julie (James) Hanson, Janice (Gary) Lemon, Joyce (James) Pruisman; brothers-in-law, Merv (Pat) Kramer, Larry (Joan) Kramer, George (Mary) Kramer; and mother-in-law, Alice Kramer.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; wife, JoAnn; daughter, Alice Marie; and brothers, Merle and Raymond.

Major Erickson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
