Baby Boy Drowns in
12-gallon Water Jug

John David Witzel, twenty-two months old, and the youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Witzel, of Ulster Township, was drowned last Friday about noon in a 12-gallon jug containing about nine inches of water. The child was discovered by an older brother who pulled him out, and medical aid was immediately summoned from Rudd and this city, also the pulmotor from here was used, but life was extinct.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the Methodist church at Rudd, Reverend Henry Schmidt officiating. The little one was laid to rest in the Rudd Cemetery. The many friends of the family extend sincere sympathy in the tragic loss of their babe.

Elmer Witzel is a cousin of Chris Witzel, of Osage.

John David Witzel, the 22 month old baby boy of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Witzel of Ulster Township, was drowned Friday, July 25th, in a jar of water in the back yard of his home. Physicians from Charles City and Rudd were called together with a pulmotor of Charles City which was used for a half an hour, but nothing could be done to save the little tot as there was no heart action.

At 11:45 Friday morning the baby was _____. _____ just back of the house, the jar containing about 9 inches of water. Not long before, the mother had heard the child playing about, so that he could not have been in that position for very long.

He was found by his brother, 6 or 7 years of age, who pulled him out, according to a Charles City physician who was called.

The remains were taken to an undertaking parlor at Charles City late Friday afternoon and the funeral took place at 1:30 from the home and at 2:30 o'clock from the M.E. church at Rudd. Rev. Henry Schmidt officiating with interment at Rudd cemetery. Deceased was born October 28, 1922 and was the youngest of four children.
