GARY G. VALA

CLEAR LAKE - Gary G. Vala, 60, of 713 S. Thirteenth St., Clear Lake, died Friday (May 3, 2002) at his residence.

A Funeral Mass Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 a.m.Tuesday, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Clear Lake, with Monsignor Joseph Slepicka officiating. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Roseville, Iowa, with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating.

Visitation will be Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake and then one hour before the service on Tuesday at the church.

Gary was born on August 29, 1941, the son of Charles and Pauline (Nikolas) Vala. He graduated from Immaculate Conception Catholic School, Charles City, in 1959. He attended college in Brookings, S.D.

Gary moved to Sterling, Illinois, where he worked in a steel mill. He served in the United States Air Force from 1963-1966 at Lackland Air Force Base. Following the service he moved back to Charles City to farm the family farm and he also worked at the Oliver plant in Charles City. He later worked at Sarah Lee in New Hampton and in 1974 moved to Clear Lake. He worked at E.F. Johnson as maintenance foreman and later at Sperry-Univac/Unisys, until their relocation. He was known as ''The Clear Lake Handyman'' and could fix anything.

Gary married Pam Pearce December 27, 1969, in the Catholic Church, at Nashua.

Gary is a former member of Clear Lake Knights of Columbus.

Gary is survived by his two children; Sheila Anderson and her husband, Lundy, of Fairfield, and Kurt Vala, Concord, N.H.; his mother, Pauline Vala, Charles City; grandson, Spencer Minette, Concord, N.H., and his former wife, Pam Vala, of Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Vala; and brother, Father Ralph R. Vala.
