Sylvan A. "Sam" Momberg

MASON CITY, IOWA -- Sylvan A. "Sam" Momberg, 75, of 307 Parkridge Dr., Mason City died early Friday morning, July 11, 1997, at North Iowa Mercy Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 100 First St. Officiating will be the Rev. Richard Scheerer. Interment will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City, where a flag-folding ceremony will be performed by the Charles City Memorial Association.

Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today at Fullerton Patterson James Funeral Chapel. An Elks Memorial Service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home by the Mason City Elk's Lodge #375.

Sam was born on September 7, 1921 at Floyd, the son of Floyd C. and Orpha Louise "Hepner" Momberg. He received his diploma in 1939 from the Charles City High School. For a short time after graduation he worked for the Oliver Corporation in Charles City, and again after his time in the Army.

During World War II Sam served his country in the 91st Signal Corp. and was stationed in both Italy and North Africa. Sam was united in marriage to Lynne Ballantyne on May 15, 1942, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, and to this union were born two children.

He started working in Sales for the Bordon Ice Cream Company in Charles City and soon moved up to become the Branch Manager in Clinton, and then was promoted to District Manager in 1957 when they moved back to Mason City. From 1965 until 1969 he served with the company as the State General Manager in Des Moines and then moved back to "God's Country" of Mason City, where he maintained his manager position until his retirement from the company in 1980.

Sam, not being a person who could sit still, then worked in sales for area dairies and finished up his working career with 10 years of service at AMPI as a Government Inspector.

In his spare time Sam enjoyed hunting for upland game birds, bowling and playing golf. He was a Deacon at the First Congregational United Church of Christ where he was a member, he was a former member of the Kiwanis, and had served as a Scout leader in Clinton. He was also a life member of the Elk's Lodge in Mason City, the President of the Pilgrim Place board, and a member of the VFW in Mason City. He also loved being active with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Sam leaves many happy memories with his loving wife of 55 years, Lynne of Mason City; his children who include one daughter, Barbara, and her husband, James Nervig of Urbandale, and one son, Stephen A. and his wife, Debbie Momberg of Faribault, Minn.; six grandchildren, Margaret and Robert Nervig, Beth Fette, Kathryn Ryan, Christopher and Richard Momberg; and two great-grandchildren, Kayla and Nicholas Fette.

He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother Hazel, one infant sister, and one brother, Wayne Momberg.
