CHARLES CITY, IOWA - JoAnn (Mrs. Wayne) Miles, 67, of 806 Tenth St., died Tuesday (June 5, 2001) at her home in Charles City.

The funeral for JoAnn Miles will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Messiah Lutheran Church, Charles City, with the Rev. Curt Schneider officiating. Burial will be in the Sunnyside Memory Gardens, south of Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City, from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church an hour before the service on Friday.

JoAnn Joyce Miles was born Feb. 26, 1934, in Hamilton County, the daughter of Thomas and Marie (Brown) Peterson. She was educated in the rural system in Rose Grove No. 9, Ellsworth Elementary and graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1951. She attended Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) from the fall of 1951 through the fall of 1953.

On Jan. 31, 1954, she was united in marriage to Wayne H. Miles at Trinity Lutheran Church, Ellsworth. While living there, she was a telephone operator and bookkeeper for the telephone company, president of the PTA, president of the Deb-Hart Club, a Sunday school teacher and was active in scouting. She was president of the American Legion Auxiliary unit (Ellsworth); county (Hamilton) and 8th district (14 counties in North Central Iowa).

On Dec. 1, 1970, the family moved to Charles City, to what would later be 1819 Timber Ave. to raise turkeys. JoAnn became involved in many community activities: Sunday school teacher, president of Charles City Woman's Club, president of Double Dozen Club and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She was very active in the Floyd County Democratic Party, serving as chair from 1976 to 1982. She continued her work in the American Legion Auxiliary, serving as unit (Charles City) county (Floyd) and 4th District (12 counties in northeast Iowa) president. After serving in many Department (State of Iowa) appointments, JoAnn was elected Department President for the '97-'98 year. She was a life member of the Floyd County Historical Society and was an avid basketball fan, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Boston Celtics.

Living family members include her husband, Wayne, of Charles City; their three children and families, Joyce and Tom Hopfensperger and son, Allan, of Cedar Rapids; David Miles and Loree, of Des Moines; and John Miles and Linda and their daughter Ahafia, and son, Kestrel, of Kansas City, Mo.; three step-grandsons and one step-granddaughter; a brother, Clifford Peterson, of Des Moines; a sister, Darlene Levey, of Des Moines and Kihea, Maui, Hawaii; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Norman and David Lee; and one sister, Thora.

Memorials may be directed to the Hospice of North Iowa, Charles City site, the Messiah Lutheran Church or the Past Presidents Scholarship, American Legion Auxiliary.
