ROCKFORD, IOWA - Oscar W. Gabel, 90, of rural Rockford, died Sunday (May 3, 2001) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Roseville, rural Marble Rock. Monsignor Walter V. Brunkan, pastor of St. Mary's, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Oscar William Gabel was born on November 1, 1910, in Ulster Township, Floyd County, the son of Frederick Michael and Margaret Levine (Noss) Gabel. He received his education in rural Floyd County schools and St. Mary's Catholic School of Roseville.

On June 7, 1933, Oscar was united in marriage to Dorothy Marie Slinger.

Mr. Gabel operated a Phillips 66 gas station on Gilbert Street in Charles City where he lived for three years. He moved to a farm south of Charles City and lived there for three years before moving to the farm at which he resided for the past 62 years.

Oscar was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Roseville, where he was an anonymous donor for many of St. Mary's projects. He often lent his talents and labor to beautify the church, cemetery grounds and facilities. He was a member of the Floyd County Farm Bureau and a former member of the Floyd County Board of Review.

Farming was Oscar's life; he enjoyed his hard-working farm life with his wife of 61 and a half years, Dorothy, assisting him. The raising of livestock, hogs and his prized Hereford cattle brought much enjoyment to him. He took pride in making his farmsteads look beautiful. He was honored with the Century Farm Plaque in 1976.

Oscar enjoyed wood working, working in his shop and building and maintaining buildings. He also enjoyed his church, his collie dog "Lady," bird watching, growing and caring for trees, playing "500" card games, automobiles and going for drives. He liked going to McAllen, Texas, for several weeks in the winter.

Oscar was a courageous man who, when called upon, helped out in any manner he could. He enjoyed the time he spent with his children, grandchildren, extended family and many friends.

Those thankful for being a part of Oscar's life include two daughters and their husbands, Doris E. and Jim Murray and Gila J. and Ronald Jorgensen; two sons, Gerald F. Gabel of Rockford and John B Gabel and his wife, Patrice, of Brookings, S.D.; nine grandchildren, Michael Murray of Pukalani, Maui, Hawaii, Joanne O'Reilly of Iowa Falls, Sandra Haller of Loveland, Colo., Lori Mehmen of Orchard, Kathleen Smith of Rockford, Teresa Pettit of Floyd, James Jorgensen of Charles City, Christopher Gable of Reddick, Fla., and Elizabeth Wagner of Crystal Lake, Ill; 15 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-grandchild; a sister, Mrs. Ruth Duncan of Charles City; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy, who died March 9, 1995; and four brothers, Edgar, Wilbur and Harvey Gabel and Carl Gabel in infancy.

Those considering an expression of sympathy may consider St. Mary's Catholic Church of Roseville or Hospice of North Iowa.
